Shams are included in many bedding sets, and are traditionally used to put the finishing touch on the bed. When included in the bedding set, they will match the comforter, bed spread, or duvet or duvet cover. The sham goes over the pillow, and in most cases, those pillows are not used for sleeping, just for decorating. They can be removed from the pillow you use to sleep on each night, and then put back on in the morning when you make up the bed, but this can be a little tedious. Shams are for decorating, so the quality of the pillow that they are used on is not so important. If you have some older pillows around the house that you are not using, sham them up! If not, buy the cheapest pillow you can find for your shams.

It’s also important to note that pillow shams come in basic sizes, but there are differences in those basic size categories. Specifically, a standard sham can be either 26” x 20”, or 27” x 21”. A king pillow sham can be either 36” x 20”, or 37” x 21”. And a European pillow sham can either be 26” x 26”, or 27” x 27”. So if you have an extra fluffy pillow, take care to be sure that you order the bigger of the sham size for your pillow size.
